How Shemar Moore's Role on 'Criminal Minds' Prepared Him for … – BuddyTV (blog)

It’s safe to say that fans were pretty sad when it came out that Shemar Moore would be leaving Criminal Minds. He had been on the CBS series since it premiered back in 2005 and the small screen just wouldn’t be the same without him.

So when it was also announced that he would be joining the cast of the S.W.A.T. reboot, I definitely rejoiced on the inside. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder how similar Criminal Minds‘ Derek Morgan would be to Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, Moore’s character on S.W.A.T. (Moore will be reprising the role of Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the 2003 film of the same name.) Thankfully, it looks like his role as Derek prepared him to play Daniel.

Criminal Minds Star Shemar Moore Lands His Next Gig>>>

For starters, just like Derek, Hondo has street smarts. Derek hails from one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the South Side of Chicago, so his street smarts stand out as the Supervisory Special Agent on the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Moore will likely be using those same skills when he plays Hondo. He is described as a character who is the lead lieutenant in Los Angeles but hasn’t forgotten his background or the streets he was raised in.

Hondo is said to be one who “exudes calmness, but is always ready for action.” This is definitely a similarity between Morgan and Hondo. Morgan had no problem standing up to criminals who would try to intimidate him. He definitely remained calm until someone tried to push him too far; then he proved time and time again that he wasn’t the one to mess with.

Known for being a former jock, even Moore’s physical appearance in Criminal Minds prepared him for his upcoming role in S.W.A.T. Hondo might be a little bit more active as the lead lieutenant compared to Derek’s current status. But he was notably one of the most fit of his unit as well as having a black belt, and he never had a problem chasing down criminals whether it was in a car or on foot. No word on when S.W.A.T. will debut on CBS.
